About 200 people—former track teammates, coaches, professors, university officials, friends and family members—turned out at the St. Denis Centre on Friday to wish alumna Melissa Bishop (BHK 2010, B.Ed 2011) godspeed on the next leg of her journey to the London Olympics.
Bishop will compete in the 800 metre race after becoming just the third Canadian woman to beat the two-minute mark in the event.
Lancer track and field head coach Dennis Fairall said he was proud of Bishop, the first athlete he has personally coached to qualify for the Olympics in his 40-year career.
The athletics department invites the campus and the broader community to extend best wishes to Lancer alumna Melissa Bishop as she sets off to compete for Canada in the London Olympics.
A public reception starts at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, July 20, in the multi-purpose room, St. Denis Centre. Bishop will leave for Europe the next day in preparation for her competition in the 800m event.
Fellow grad Andrea Steen (BHK 1979, honorary LLD 2002), a hurdler at the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Games, is scheduled to speak at Friday’s reception.
Athletics director Gord Grace was recognized by his peers yesterday for leading his department through a transformation that has helped to bring the University of Windsor to the forefront of Canadian university athletics.
Grace received the International Athletics Director of the Year Award from the US-based National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics during a luncheon at its annual convention in Dallas. The association represents more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Sport therapist David Stoute received one year’s free on-campus parking, and Ryan Kenney of finance as well as the Leddy Library’s Kirsti Stipanicic and Michael Houlahan each won an extra vacation day.
The 2011 campus effort raised $112,000 for the United Way.
A challenge cup will recognize the Lancer varsity team each year that best exemplifies what it takes to be a champion in the classroom, on the playing field and throughout the community.
