George Mitri, son and fatherGeorge Mitri, an incoming student of engineering, celebrates winning a $500 tuition voucher in a draw during Head Start with his father George Mitri.

New students grateful for Head Start on campus life

George Mitri is looking forward to coming to the University of Windsor in the fall. A $500 tuition voucher just made it a little easier.

Mitri, a senior at École secondaire catholique E.J. Lajeunesse, won the prize during the first day of Head Start orientation, Tuesday. He will use it to offset his tuition when he begins studies in mechanical engineering in September. He said he always planned to attend the University of Windsor, and the new Centre for Engineering Innovation sealed the deal.

He and his father—also named George Mitri—joined hundreds of newly-admitted first-year students attending the campus program for academic advising, tours, and information on services.

Assumption College High School students Natalie Rodzinka and Yasmin Alkhouri will begin their studies in nursing. They said they appreciated being able to attend Head Start.

“We have come to the open houses and every event,” said Rodzinka, who works as a lifeguard at the St. Denis Centre pool. “There is so much to get our heads around.”

Alkhouri said that Tuesday’s sessions continued to provide her with new information: “It helped me to understand better the requirements of my program.”

The campus has made a good impression on both of them, with faculty, students and staff providing a sincere welcome.

“Everyone has been really nice,” Rodzinka said. “It’s just hitting me now that I am going to be starting university!”

Head Start continues through June 11. The program, organized by the Educational Development Centre, includes tours of campus facilities, information sessions about university life for students and parents, academic advising, presentations on residence and food services, and an information fair highlighting campus services.
